ABSTRACT:
The NaOH treatment is suitable for the conservation of wet grain after harvest, but it also can be applied to dry grain if water is added. In this study, nutritive value of wheat grain treated with sodium hydroxide and wheat meal alone were compared. In digestibility trials on wethers, the dry matter digestibility of alkali-treated grain was increased by 5.4% compared with wheat meal (88.3% and 82.9%, respectively), the organic matter digestibility was increased by 4.5% (89.7% and 85.2%, respectively), the nitrogen-free extract digestibility was increased by 2.0% (93.6% and 91.6%, respectively) and the digestibility of gross energy was increased by 3.7% (87.5% and 83.8%, respectively). The nitrogen degradability experiments were performed using in sacco method with three dry cows with large ruminal cannulas ( 120 mm internal diameter). Nitrogen degradability of alkali-treated wheat (57.9%) was by 27.7% lower (P<0.01) than that of wheat meal (85.6%). The mobile bag technique with dry cows fitted with the T-piece cannulas in the proximal duodenum was used to ascertain the intestinal digestibility. Intestinal digestibility of rumen undegraded protein of alkali-treated wheat (93.0%) was by 18.8% higher (P<0.01) than that of wheat meal (74.2%).
